Toronto Maple Leafs Move into 2nd Place

TORONTO - The Maple Leafs withstood an early pounding from the Ottawa Senators and then pulled out a late victory. Alexei Ponikarovsky's go-ahead goal midway through the third period lifted Toronto to a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.

The Senators, desperately trying to get back into the NHL Canadian Championships, came out in a foul mood and went at every Maple Leafs player they could find. Toronto, backed by strong goaltending from Vesa Toskala, were able to stand up to the challenge, and eventually took control.

There is a two week break in the Championships, before the Montreal Canadiens visit the Ottawa Senators on January 17th. The Canadiens who have only played twice in the Championships, will host the Maple Leafs on Feburary 7th, before making their Western Road Trip.

Mid-February will see the Western Canadian Teams begin to make their way East.

Each team plays 10 games. One home and one away against each of the other Canadian teams.

Teams in the same conference play each other more than twice during the regular season, however only two of the meetings were selected (home and away). The games selected were Nationally Televised on TSN, CBC-Hockey Night in Canada (particularly on Hockey Day in Canada), or Holidays where possible.

The Canadian Championship will use same point structure as the NHL Regular Season (W - 2 pts, OTL - 1 pt, SOL - 1 pt)

The Champion will be the team with the most points.
